TITLE: BEWARE OF ENVY (PART 4)

KEY TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 4:11 KJV: “Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.”

Jesus Himself taught against envy, and the comparison of oneself to others. In the parable of the laborers in the vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16), those who worked all day envied those who worked only a short time but received the same wage. In Matthew 20:15, the landowner asked, "Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?" This parable challenges the fairness of God’s grace and the human tendency to envy others’ blessings. HEBREWS 13:6

Envy is often fueled by a sense of injustice, or perceived unfairness. In Psalms 37:1, we are advised, "Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity." Instead of envying the wicked who prosper, believers are encouraged to trust in the Lord and do good. PROVERBS 3:5-6

The early church also dealt with issues of envy and strife. In Philippians 1:15-17, Paul acknowledges that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but he rejoices that Christ is preached regardless of the motives. This passage demonstrates that even when envy exists, God’s purposes can still prevail. ROMANS 8:28

PRAYER: God Almighty, please grant me the grace to firmly trust in your providing and protecting power, so that I will have no reason to harbor envy in my heart against anyone, in Jesus Christ’s mighty name. Amen.

REFLECTION: Job 5:2 KJV: “For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.”
