TITLE: BEWARE OF ENVY (PART 3)

KEY TEXT: 1 Corinthians 3:3 KJV: “For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?”

Proverbs 27:4 provides a stark observation: "Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?" This proverb suggests that envy is even more dangerous and destructive than wrath and anger, making it a formidable force that can be difficult to withstand. JAMES 3:14 

To combat envy, Christians are called to love and support one another genuinely. In 1 Corinthians 13:4, Paul describes the nature of true love: "Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up." Love, in its purest form, does not envy, but rather rejoices in the success and well-being of others. PROVERBS 27:4 

The wisdom literature of the Bible provides further guidance on avoiding envy. Ecclesiastes 4:4 states, "Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit." The Preacher observes that much of human effort is driven by envy, yet it ultimately leads to frustration and futility. PROVERBS 14:30

PRAYER: My Father, I have decided to live my life as your word instructs me. I refuse to allow an envious spirit into my life. Grant me the grace to be content with what you have blessed me with, in Jesus Christ’s mighty name. Amen.  

REFLECTION: Proverbs 14:30 KJV: “A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.”
