TITLE: SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT

KEY TEXT: 1 Corinthians 12:10 KJV: “To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:”

DISCERNMENT DEFINED: Discernment, as defined in the dictionary, is "the quality of being able to grasp and comprehend what is obscure." In theological terms, discernment in the Bible is a process of "assessing and evaluating, particularly in relation to trying to determine God’s will in a particular situation or for one’s life direction." It is the ability to properly differentiate or make determinations. When we have the ability to discern, it will help us in this heavenly race. Many mistakes that people make, we can never make them when we can properly discern. A discerning believer is never ashamed of his spirit given insight but is aware and at attention of any misleading teaching of the wicked, rampant in today’s church. Acts 13:9-10

WHY YOU MUST DISCERN: Have discernment so you can discern what is good and do it. To know what is evil and eschew it. You need to have this spirit of discernment because it will make our life of holiness much smoother and easier for us. So many things we do thinking it is right, because we didn’t discern; we didn’t apply the necessary wisdom of God. Discernment is the ability to differentiate between the bad/wrong choices and the right/wise choice. An undiscerning Christian can cause massive destruction to the mission and role of the church. He or she can allow false truths to be taught and sin to go on without repentance or reverence to God. 2 Corinthians 11:14

THE GIFT: Discernment is also a spiritual gift. As a gift of the Spirit, discernment is the ability to know, with assurance, whether certain behaviours or teachings claimed to be of God are, in reality, of God, the flesh, or of the devil. The purpose of this gift is to prevent confusion and false teachings from infiltrating the church. Psalm 119:125 and James 1:5-6 tell us we are to ask for discernment. This is an age where a lot of false news, false videos, and false productions are going on. So be careful what we watch on social media. Receiving the spirit of discernment starts with first a realisation of your need for it, and the eventual process of seeking it from God in prayers and meditation on His holy word. 1 Corinthians 12:10

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, give unto us the spirit of discernment to be able to discern good from evil, right from wrong, and to discern the wicked plans of the devil against the children of God in Jesus Christ’s mighty name. Amen.

REFLECTION: Psalm 119:125 KJV: “I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know thy testimonies.”
