TITLE: BEWARE OF ENVIOUS SPIRIT

KEY TEXT: JAMES 3:16 KJV: "For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work."

Envy, often described as a feeling of discontentment or resentment aroused by someone else's possessions, qualities, or luck, is a deeply rooted emotion that has been addressed throughout history. In the book of Proverbs, it is written: "A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones" (Proverbs 14:30). This verse emphasizes the destructive nature of envy, portraying it as a force that corrodes the very essence of one's being. PROVERBS 24:1

Envy not only harms the individual harboring it but also affects relationships and communities. The apostle Paul cautioned against envy in his letter to the Galatians, stating: "Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another" (Galatians 5:26). Here, envy is portrayed as a barrier to unity and cooperation, leading to division and strife among believers. JAMES 3:16

Furthermore, envy often stems from a comparison with others, leading to feelings of inadequacy or inferiority. The psalmist reflects on this in Psalm 73:3, saying, "For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked." This verse highlights the temptation to envy those who seem to prosper despite their wickedness, leading to disillusionment and resentment. TITUS 3:3

PRAYER: O Lord, my God, I am sorry for ever envying anyone. Forgive me and grant me the grace never to allow an envious spirit into my life, in Jesus Christ's mighty name. Amen.

REFLECTION: PROVERBS 24:1 KJV: "Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them."
