TITLE: OVERCOMING THE FORCE OF BACKSLIDING

KEY TEXT: Jeremiah 3:12 KJV: “Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the Lord; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the Lord, and I will not keep anger for ever.”

UNDERSTANDING BACKSLIDING: In the Bible, backsliding refers to turning away from God after knowing His ways. It is a drift from faith, obedience, or worship, often characterized by returning to old habits or sins. This drifting from God is addressed throughout scripture as a serious concern. It is essential to recognize that backsliding often begins subtly, often as a gradual drift rather than a sudden departure. "My people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him." (HOSEA 11:7)

GOD'S GRIEF OVER BACKSLIDING: When God’s people backslide, it grieves Him deeply. Like a loving Father, He desires a close relationship with each of us, and backsliding represents a painful rejection of His love and guidance. Our choices can either draw us closer to Him or push us further away. “How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? … mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together.” (HOSEA 11:8)

THE ROOT CAUSES OF BACKSLIDING: The reasons people backslide are varied, including neglecting prayer, distancing from God’s Word, and succumbing to worldly influences. Satan often uses these distractions to pull believers away from their faith. When we neglect the spiritual disciplines that anchor us, we become vulnerable to a slow and steady decline. "Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?" (GALATIANS 5:7)

PRAYER: Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me for abandoning my first love for you. I repent today. Please restore me and grant me steadfast grace, in Jesus Christ’s mighty name. Amen.

REFLECTION: Isaiah 55:7 KJV: “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.”
