TITLE: GUARD YOURSELF AGAINST THE FORCES OF BACKSLIDING 

KEY TEXT: “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame” (Hebrews 6:4-6 KJV).

Every believer would pray earnestly and fervently against backsliding if they knew what a backslider loses. Most people take backsliding as nothing because they think one could backslide, return to Jesus Christ at will, and continue with his or her duties in the house of God as usual. Most believers do not think about the spiritual implications, and they hardly take heed of the warnings of Jesus Christ to His followers when He told them that anyone who puts his or her hands on the plow and looks back is unworthy of His Kingdom. Christians do not know how much mockery that Jesus Christ receives from the devil whenever they backslide, putting God to shame. Luke 9:62 KJV 

THINGS ARE NEVER THE SAME: Many believers think their relationship with God remains the same whenever they fall away and come back; hence, they could walk away from God willingly and come back whenever they like. What a dangerous belief and damnable action! No man can hold down the hand of God nor truncate His plans. First, a backslider loses his or her place in God, which might take a very long time to recover (that is, if it could be recovered as it was at first). It is written: “Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him” (Hebrews 10:38 KJV). Do you see what I have seen in that Scripture? God said that He has no pleasure in backsliders. It is a serious matter that should be taken seriously. Do you want to work for God when He will no longer have pleasure in you and what you are doing for Him? Strive against backsliding if your answer is no. Ezekiel 18:24 KJV

DO NOT ENCOURAGE YOURSELF TO SIN: Many believers hold on to the Scripture that says a righteous man will fall seven times and rise again; hence, they walk away and come back to God anytime they like, not considering what they lose spiritually each time they slide back. All that most people know about the story of the prodigal son is that he returned to the family and his father welcomed him back home with excitement, but forgot that he did not have an inheritance in the family anymore; he would be at the mercy of his brother when his father died. So, believers must be careful not to squander their glorious, God-given potential, thinking they could always come back to God at any time. Some have left, died, and ended up in hell before they could return to the Lord again. Repent now and stand against backsliding. Remember, you must be genuinely born again. Proverbs 14:14 KJV 

PRAYER: O Lord, my God, I repent of my backsliding lifestyle, falling and rising at will. My eyes are now open to see the consequences. I am sorry for giving Satan occasion to mock you in the past, in Jesus Christ’s mighty name. Amen.

REFLECTION: “For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries” (Hebrews 10:26-27 KJV).
